The year has just begun and a fatal accident has that occurred along the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway has been recorded on January 3rd, 2022. The accident involved a Mitsubishi Canter and a Mazda bus colliding and killing at least six people.

The Sector Commander, Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Ahmed Umar, stated in a report to journalists that, “A total of 38 people were involved in the accident which comprised 20 men, 13 women, three male children and two female children.”

He continued further by saying, “Twelve people were injured, eight men, three women and one female child. A total of six deaths were recorded from the crash, comprising four men, one male child and one female child.”
The accident occurred around 12:10 pm on Monday with the likely cause being reckless driving. It is not the first accident happening due to careless driving.
In fact, last year, the FRSC in Ogun State identified incessant driving against traffic as a major challenge confronting its personnel on the Lagos-Abeokuta expressway.
The Itori Unit Commander, Shamaki Yerima, said that: “There is the need for drivers to change their orients about the use of road so that the highway could be safer for other motoring public. Until drivers change their wrong way of using the roads, there will always be continuous negative effects which sometimes lead to loss of lives.”
The injured victims, however, have been taken to the State hospital in Abeokuta for medical treatment while the corpses of the dead have been deposited in the State hospital’s Morgue.
Accidents or another form of occurrence have happened that has taken the lives of so many along that same expressway. The road has to undergo major repairs which have caused flooding and accidents resulting in the loss of many lives.
