Motorcyclists In Cameroon Start Protest Over Nigeria’s Fuel Subsidy Removal

The union of motorcyclists in Cameroon has started a protest against the fuel subsidy removal in Nigeria.

The information was passed across by Eons Intelligence, a Twitter account specialized in publishing security updates. It was stated in a video posted on Twitter on Wednesday, 7th June, that commercial motorcyclists in Cameroon had staged a protest in solidarity with Nigerians on the effects of the subsidy removal in the country.

The account notes that the motorcyclists expressed their concerns and dissatisfaction with the fuel subsidy removal in French while also criticizing President Bola Tinubu’s declaration of fuel subsidy removal.

Recall that on Monday, 29th May, President Bola Tinubu, during his inaugural speech, stated that the petrol subsidy in Nigeria had become a thing of the past. 

In the speech, the new President stated: “On fuel subsidy, unfortunately, in the budget, before I assumed office, no provision is made for fuel subsidy. So, fuel subsidy is gone.”

Since the president made the declaration, the price of fuel has increased by 200 per cent. Speaking to Punch, National Controller Operations, Mike Osatuyi told the publication that the price of a 33,000 metric tons tanker of petrol that was sold at N8 million before subsidy removal now sells at N22 million and N23 million, depending on the location of the filling station from the depots.
