The 2021 Toyota Camry is a midsize sedan that holds its own against pricey luxury cars from European manufacturers, with its available hybrid powertrain and upscale interior. The 2021 Toyota Corolla falls into the compact sedan category, through its features and performance Let’s look at the design and features of both and decide which is right for you.

Camry vs. Corolla: Engine options

Both the Toyota Camry and Corolla use engines that offer a good mix of power, fuel economy, and reliability.

The base trim on the Toyota Camry uses a 2.5-liter, four-cylinder engine that produces 205 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque for spirited performance around town. Paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission, it’s good for an EPA-rated 28/39 mpg city/highway.

For the ultimate acceleration and passing power, an optional 3.5-litre, V6 engine makes 301 horsepower and 276 lb-ft of torque. The fuel economy is still excellent at an EPA-rated 22/33 mpg city/highway.

The highlight of Camry powertrain options is the well-known system on the hybrid model. The Camry Hybrid has a total of 208 horsepower and returns a stunning EPA-rated 51/53 mpg city/highway.

The 2021 Toyota Corolla is more basic in its engine choices, having only one, but it’s a solid performer that’s easy on the wallet. Using a 1.8-litre four-cylinder with 132 horsepower and 128 lb-ft of torque, the Corolla gets a thrifty EPA-rated 30/38 mpg city/highway when paired with a continuously variable transmission. Also available is a six-speed manual for those who like to row their own gears.

When comparing the available engine choices in the Camry and Corolla, it comes down to preference. Do you want a basic engine that has good power and economy? Or do you want something with extra horsepower or incredible gas mileage? If it’s the latter, the 2021 Toyota Camry is the better choice.

Camry vs. Corolla: Comfortable, functional interiors

The 2021 Toyota Camry leads the way with an interior that’s a mix of high technology and convenience. It starts with a 7-inch touchscreen that’s also available as an 8-inch upgrade and standard Apple CarPlay to connect your iOS devices. There’s also standard Toyota Wi-Fi Connect and multiple USB ports to keep phones and tablets at full power.

If you love music and hearing your favourite songs out on the road, the Camry has an available Audio Plus system with JBL and Clari-Fi technology, routed through a total of nine speakers.

Optional leather-trimmed, heated front seats and an assortment of trims like textured metal or layered wood make for a luxurious environment. And standard automatic climate control keeps you and your passenger’s comfortable no matter the outside temperature.

With 15.1 cubic feet of cargo space, the Camry has plenty of room for grocery runs or a weekend getaway.

The 2021 Toyota Corolla has an interior that’s simpler than the Camry but still has what you need to enjoy the ride. The Corolla features a 6.1-inch touchscreen that’s also available as a 7-inch upgrade, perfect for navigating through different interior functions easily. The Entune Audio suite, also standard on the Camry, has six speakers and iPod connectivity, so you can listen to your own music rather than scrolling through radio stations.

The Corolla has standard air conditioning with available automatic climate control so that you can keep cool on hot summer days. The interior trim features SofTex and plastics that are easy to wipe down in a spill.

The Corolla is right there with the Camry as far as cargo space is concerned, with 13 cubic feet of available storage.

When it comes down to choosing between the Camry or the Corolla, it’s a comparison of a value-driven car that has everything you need versus something more upscale that has a touch of luxury. Either way, you’ll get something that’s enjoyable to own and drive.

Camry vs. Corolla safety features

Today’s cars have come a long way in the safety department, and the 2021 Toyota Camry and Corolla are no different. In fact, Toyota vehicles have a host of safety equipment that competes with anything in the industry.

Each car comes standard with Toyota Safety Sense, a combination of features to keep you protected no matter the situation. Usually, comprehensive safety features are optional and add to the cost of a vehicle, making you choose between value and extra protection. Buy Toyota Safety Sense makes them standard with things like a pre-collision package that includes pedestrian detection, lane-departure alert with steering assist, automatic high beams, and dynamic radar cruise control.

Both the Camry and Corolla have standard backup cameras with projected path assistance. They also come standard with Toyota’s Star Safety System, a combination of six features – including vehicle stability control and anti-lock brakes – for additional reassurance.

The Camry takes safety even further with several additional available options. The standard backup camera features the option to upgrade to dynamic guidelines, so you can expertly manoeuvre around parking lots. Other safety upgrades include a bird’s-eye-view camera with an overhead 360-degree view that enhances visibility whether you’re in drive or reverse.

Camry or Corolla? Which is better for you?

When buying a car today, you have a lot of choices. Though Toyota is an industry leader, there are other excellent choices like the Honda Accord. Read up on how the Camry and Accord size up against each other here.

Another thing to consider is whether you’re buying new or used. Buying a used car can save you thousands of dollars and, if you get a well-cared-for example, can provide years of reliable driving.

If you decide to buy a used, you’ll want to drive off in a car that has the protection of a warranty and includes scheduled maintenance. And you want to deal with people who don’t haggle or try to add hidden costs. Shift offers best-in-class service contracts at a fair price without sales pressure. You get the great price and value of a used car with the bumper-to-bumper protection of a new car.
