Finding a trustworthy mechanic is like looking for a needle in a haystack; most would call it virtually impossible, and most would joke that cheating is what most mechanics have running through them. It is widely known that most mechanics are untrustworthy, be it with the cars in their care or with the money given to them for repairs. You as a mechanic are probably reading this blog not as a way to stop the norm but as a way to keep your customers coming back. But how do you want your customers’ reliance on you when you are untrustworthy?

If you ask anyone with a car to tell you a story about a mechanic who tried to scam them or play smart, the stories would be countless, because most believe it is a rite of passage and a way to make more money. This isn’t to say that all mechanics are untrustworthy or try to rip off customers, but the truth remains that the possibility of finding a genuine mechanic is very rare. 

Perhaps you are a mechanic in training “an apprentice,” who is under the tutelage of another mechanic, and you see the acts as “normal,” and you continue from where your teacher started after your “freedom,” so the cycle continues. But you notice that most customers aren’t attuned to you, the reason being your inflated prices. No one wants to pay for something that doesn’t require getting done, and this is a common tactic among mechanics that needs to stop. • Build Trust 

As we rightly said, finding a good mechanic is easy; finding a trustworthy one is practically impossible, and most Nigerian car owners can attest to this. As a mechanic, you don’t want to be known as one who is untrustworthy because people would rarely trust you with their cars. That is why building trust with the customer is very essential, and how do you build trust? Try as much as possible to relate to and listen to your customer’s needs and worries about their car. You should ensure you come off as someone who knows what is wrong with their cars; you don’t want to speak in parables and mention things that the customer doesn’t have an idea about; relay it in layman’s terms. Let them understand what you are saying so they don’t need to get a second opinion from another mechanic.

• Give proper diagnostics

As a mechanic, you might be tempted not to give a proper diagnosis of the problem that is wrong with the car. Don’t get it wrong, we don’t mean that you don’t know what is actually wrong with the car, but, in a way to be cunning, most mechanics give the wrong diagnosis and then get paid to fix what isn’t the issue with the car in the first place, then return the car to the customer knowing fully well that the issue hasn’t been resolved, and this would mean the customer calling you a few days later and having you give another diagnosis for the car to fix the real issue, getting paid double money for work you didn’t do. On the path to being a trustworthy mechanic, you absolutely shouldn’t carry this out because if the customer finds out, he would never bring his car to you and would continue to badmouth you to the ends of the earth. 

• Don’t overinflate the price

We know business is business and the way to go is to squeeze every last penny out of a body to make a profit. Most mechanics tend to overinflate prices so as to get the best of both worlds. In actuality, they don’t know they are killing their business. Customers would flock to places where they could get a good deal on fixing their cars, and once they heard you’re over inflated prices, they tended to be sceptical and seek another opinion, which might lead to a price drop from the other mechanic, and in that way they would probably never come to your shop because they knew your prices were very high. 

• Don’t buy fake car parts

Another common practice amongst mechanics is to buy fake car parts, knowing full well that they collect money for genuine ones but would readily like to pocket the remaining balance. Fake car parts are not usually for long-term use, and imagine that after just fixing a car it breaks down again. The customer has to come to drop it off at the shop, and if it keeps occurring due to these fake car parts, the customer will begin to get suspicious and might even think you don’t know what you are doing and would seek the help of another mechanic. 

• Employ Professionals

We believe we have seen countless videos of mechanical engineering trainees running away with customer cars or damaging them while “test driving.” You don’t want that to be you in any way. That’s why you should be very cautious of the people you hire. Don’t put yourself in a position where you would have to pay a customer for damages done to a car by someone you employed. This issue could easily be cured if you hire someone who surely knows what she is doing and can work professionally.
