The BMW X6 is an unusual form factor—think coupe-like SUV—bit it’s far less of an outlier than it was. With the introduction later this year of the new Mercedes-Benz GLE Coupe, a sexier take on what’s now called the M-Class, and the BMW X4 taking the form down a size, it now has company.
Despite the growing popularity of the curvaceous utility concept, the X6 continues to turn heads, and under the skin, it packs formidable capability and comfort. It also now includes the X6 M, an exceptionally powerful edition with a twin-turbo V-8, its own styling cues, and a layer of track-ready performance and infotainment technology.
BMW launched the 2019 X5 at the end of 2018 and gave it a carefully modulated version of the same look that has graced the SUV since it was new. The silhouettes haven’t changed, but the 2019 X5 gets a bigger twin-nostril grille and slimmer headlights, as well as a gentle kick at the shoulder where it meets the tail. The cabin’s become quite sophisticated, with options for cut-crystal shifter and knob caps and supple Merino leather.
Two upgraded powertrains make the cut in the X5 for the 2019 model year. A 340-horsepower version of the single-turbo inline-6 can hit 60 mph in 5.3 seconds; a 456-hp version of BMW’s twin-turbo V-8 does it in 4.6 seconds. Both share an 8-speed automatic and standard all-wheel drive. A plug-in hybrid will join the lineup in 2021.
The BMW 428i GrandCoupe is a five-passenger, four-door hatchback styled as a coupe. It is offered in two primary trims that correspond to a different engine: 428i and 435i.
Standard equipment on the 428i Gran Coupe includes 18-inch wheels, automatic and adaptive xenon headlights, LED running lights, foglights, automatic wipers, a sunroof, a power liftgate, auto-dimming side and rearview mirrors, dual-zone automatic climate control, “SensaTec” premium vinyl upholstery, eight-way power front seats (with power-adjustable side bolsters and manually adjustable thigh support), driver memory settings, a 40/20/40-split-folding rear seat, a leather-wrapped tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, BMW’s iDrive electronics interface, Bluetooth phone, and audio connectivity, basic BMW Assist emergency services (see Safety section for details) and a nine-speaker sound system with a CD player, a USB interface, an auxiliary audio jack, and HD radio.
Four-wheel-drive sedans are divisive devices. Their buyers tend to split into two camps: snow scared drivers (who would no more cane their car in the dry than leave home without their wallet) and piston heads (intent on boldly hooning where no front or rear wheel-driver would hoon before). Of course, piston heads like the extra snow-and-go seating, but fear the four-wheel-drive gubbins will add extra weight and sap steering feel. So, does the BMW 328xi coupe cater to both groups, dodging the dynamic bullet even as it pampers the paranoid?
As you’d expect, the 328xi two-door looks no different from the regular 3er coupe. Despite all the kvetching about Chris Bangle’s flame-broiled designs, the 3 coupe marks a welcome return to bland some Bimmers. This isn’t just a car you could take home to your mother; it’s your mother’s fortieth-anniversary present.
